GOLDEN VALLEY CO.

Golden Valley County is located at the base of the Snowy Mountains in the central part of Montana.  The landscape is dotted with sagebrush,greasewood, native grasses, cottonwood trees, pine trees, rolling hills, and sandstone rim rocks.  Buffalo and Native Americans once made this area their home. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce stopped at what is now Ryegate in Sept. of 1877 on his doomed trek to Canada.  Some of the wildlife still visible in the area are: elk, deer (we are known for our white albino deer), antelope, mountain lion, bobcats, porcupine, gophers, badgers, and the occasional rattlesnake

The White Deer

This unusual sight has been seen wandering around in the back yards of Ryegate homes, below the the rims, and around the perimeter of Ryegate.  In the 1980's it was a white buck   and from the 1990's to present it is a doe.                                        

Attention Hunters!: Those portions of Hunting District 500, 511, and 530 lying within Golden Valley County are closed to the taking of deer exhibiting 75 percent or more of white coloration. This restriction may be found in the 2003 Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Hunting Regulations.

E-911 Project

The county has been working hard on the E-911 project. They are working on getting all the roads named and mapped, and getting correct physical addresses for all town and county residents to finalize the project. This method will greatly enhance the ability of ambulance and fire personnel to get to their destinations in a timely manner. The cooperation of all residents in our county is greatly appreciated. We are fortunate as being a forerunner in the state and country for having this program in place.
